// Drake x Coldplay - October's Very Cold //
For those who fancy themselves both Coldplay fanatics and hip-hop buffs, here's a sexy mash-up album produced by Nappy Roots collaborator, Chi Duly. It looks like this has been out for a minute, but what's new to me might be new to you too. I can't say all of the tracks hit the spot, but the idea is great and the tracks are executed as well as anyone could imagine. Even if you're not in love with it, store it in the library and play it next time you want to impress your cool hipster friends with your obscure mash-up collection. After all, Girl Talk is sooo mainstream now. Hit the link below...

new hype: brenton duvall
There are plenty of internet mash-up artists floating around these days, and unfortunately most of these guys/gals fails to produce a sound that is both consistent and listenable.
Enter Washington D.C.'s Brenton Duvall. He's pretty legit considering he's only 18 years old. His style is pretty smooth and does the originals justice. Not much more to say about him at this time. Check out his Soundcloud below and give him a listen. Looks like he's maxed out his DL limit, but you can stream all you want (or rip it yourself if you know how). Enjoy!

bad, real bad: 2010 song of the year edition
// The Rej3ctz - Cat Daddy //
The birth and shocking popularity of "Cat Daddy" epitomizes one of the worst and most troubling trends in hip-hop. If the 2000's were the decade of ringtone rap, the coming decade looks to be the decade of youtube clowning (or die trying). Shout out to Soulja Boy for championing both causes.
We're not talking about classic party dance moves the Humpty-Hump or the Tootsie Roll here. Ironically, we're talking about a tasteless, new-age blend of the two, inspired by - wait for it - people in wheelchairs.
Am I missing some back story here? Someone please tell me this song was written to raise money for War Amps or victims of muscular dystrophy.
No?
I tried so hard to accept the song for the viral sensation it is (1.7M youtube views as of today). I tried closing my eyes to experience the sound and (meagre) lyrical substance of the track. It's hopeless - I will never understand "Cat Daddy." Nor will I ever understand how the streets ever came to crave a dance where you imitate a human being who has lost function of their legs.
"Move your arms like you're wheelchair stuntin'." Yes, that's an actual line from the song.
In terms of the lyrical proficiency of The Rej3ctz group members, they're about as tight as a chick after shooting with Lex The Impaler. I don't know if I'm missing something here, but what significance does Spongebob have to the streets? Anyone can make the metaphorical connection between "stackin crabby patties" and making money, but this is some seriously bush league wordplay. Is "cat daddy" a noun or verb? Well according to this song, you can both do the cat daddy and have a chick eat your(?) cat daddy. Actually, I'm pretty sure there's a lyric somewhere in there about being one too. Gosh, I wish I could create a word that makes sense no matter how you use it too.
Normally, I would do some research and find out the names of the group members. In this instance, though, I absolutely refuse to know the names of these piss-poor word sayers. I would rather speak on the whole pile of shit than the individual glosettes. It's a rough career outlook when your sound is best described as "lost members of The Ying Yang Twins."
I'd write more, but it's a waste of finger energy. Watch the video once (twice max), then return immediately to something good to cleanse your ears. Repeat as needed.

best of 2010
No, I didn't forget about it! I've been busy loading a friend's USB drive with 14GB worth of stuff dating back to 2001... and I feel like I hardly scratched the surface.
Stay tuned for a rundown of my top picks from 2010! It was another great year, so come back to see where your favourites landed. =)

don't judge
Here's Melody Thornton, formerly of Pussycat Dolls fame, singing the US national anthem at this week's Clippers vs. Lakers game. Now embarking on a solo career, she'll need to bring her A-game in the ever-competitive female pop music industry. Luckily for her, she's backing up those looks with a surprisingly tight set of pipes.
Let's forget for one moment that she was a member of the PCD pop machine. Forget that her claim to fame up to this point was showing leg and playing second fiddle to Nicole Scherzinger's lead... Thornton can sing and wowed the house with her searing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Check the visuals below:

smells like awesome
// Ebrahim - Smelly Cat x Beatles //
Speaking of homegrown talent, here is a multi-talented dude who's helping to put Vancouver on the urban music map. I've personally known of him for years, as he and my brother headed a songwriting collective a few years back. It's evident that Ebrahim has worked hard to hone his craft and the fruits of his labour are obvious considering the devout fanbase he possesses. After selling out all print copies of his 2007 album, Goldrush - which is the pretty much the best album you've probably never heard of - he has since appeared mainly on his YouTube channel, dazzling hundreds of thousands viewers with his inventive mashups.
I'm a little late getting at this hilarious rendition of "Smelly Cat" (yes, of Phoebe Buffay fame), but it's definitely worth the couple of minutes of your time. Man, what I would give to have a voice like that...
